components of a computer system for the
OCR computing a level specification unit
f45 1 so the components the computer
system includes hardware hardware
consists of the physical parts of the
system so that's everything that you can
pick up you can touch you can throw you
could damage you for instance so here's
an example of piece of hardware which is
a chip inside one example could be the
processor another type of hardware
obviously is peripheral devices these
are hardware devices that are outside
the computer processor they are
typically connected to the computer by
cables but they don't just have to be
connected by cables a prince is the
obvious example it's outside the
computer itself but a hard disk is also
a peripheral even if it is in the same
box of the computer it's still a
peripheral because it's outside the
thing that does all the work and that's
the processor so we've got different
types of peripheral we have input
devices output devices and storage
devices so for input devices this allows
data to be transmitted to the computer
processor so keyboard mouse microphone
all examples of input devices so
keyboard or mice a joystick is an input
device and again another Wii Remote is
an input device now a Xbox controller
can be an input device an output device
why'd you think eyes output device is
any device that allows the computer
processor to output information so we've
got Prince and monitor headphones and
speakers our output device is the
obvious ones the vibration features on a
device would also be considered an
output so if the Xbox controller has a
vibration on it then it's also an output
device
so there's some various examples we've
got a CRT monitor or an LCD monitor
we've got princess speakers a plotter
printer as we've described a minute ago
as well
storage this is any piece of hardware
which can store data outside the
processor in a form which is suitable
for input back into the processor so
this is needed as data must be saved for
future uses to process it is switched
off also for the transfer of data from
one machine to another you would need
storage long-term storage or backing
storages sometimes called essentially if
you turn the computer off everything's
stored in the RAM which is the
short-term memory or in the processor
will disappear it is deleted so you need
storage if you're going to use that data
for future use also if you want to
transfer that data carry it from one
machine to another you'll also need some
sort of storage device to put it onto so
there's various types of storage device
we've got flash drives or solid-state
drives floppy disks zip disks CDs DVDs
you have rewritable CDs you've got
read-only CDs read only memory storage
tapes are other examples that might be
used for things like archiving removable
hard drives memory sticks potentially
you could even store to online storage
or what is sometimes known as the cloud
but they will still be stored on a
computer somewhere usually on some sort
of hard drive and you can also have
things like PC cards as well so if we
have a quick look at a diagram we have
input which goes into the processor that
comes out of the processor as output so
input data process it from calculations
whatever we do with it and then output
information and we also have the
processor can transfer data to storage
and equally storage can then go into the
processor so software we have Hardware
we've identified that the other type of
compare
we have for a computer system is
software software is a set of
instructions which make the computer
system do something useful these sets of
instructions are collected together in
work workable groups known as programs
without programs of instructions
computers would not be able to function
as they would not know what to do so
there's different types of software we
need to know about the system software
and there's application software
application software firstly this is a
program or set of instructions designed
to make the computer carry out a task it
differs from system software and that he
makes the computer do something that is
useful for the user so we have word
processing software presentation
software database software you can have
games anything like that will be
considered as application software don't
use brand names in the exam if you asked
to give an example don't say Word or
PowerPoint say word processing or
presentation try and think of as many
other different types of application
software that you can have a little
search on the internet if you're not
sure the other type of software that we
have that we need to know about is
system software this is sets of
instructions that make the hardware of
the computer ready for use so including
system software programs that allow the
humans to communicate with the computer
programs that control the movement of
the data around the computer programs
that turn instructions from human form
into a form that computer will
understand there's more detail and
system software and application software
in another video that you'll find later
on in the specification so if we have a
quick look these are the sorts of exam
questions that might come out explain
the difference between hardware and
software give two reasons why a computer
system would need to have some type of
external storage device describe the
difference between system software and
application software have a little think
