Venn Diagram
What is a Venn Diagram?
Definition
A Venn diagram (also called a
set diagram or logic diagram)
is a diagram that shows all
possible logical relations
between a finite collection of
different sets.
Visual Representation
Typically overlapping shapes,
usually circles, are used, and
an area-proportional or
scaled Venn diagram is one
in which the area of the
shape is proportional to the
number of elements it
contains.
Mathematical Basis
These diagrams represent elements as points in the plane and
sets as regions inside curves. An element is in a set S just in case
the corresponding point is in the region for S. They are a special
case of Euler diagrams.

Examples
In the example diagram,
different shapes represent
people who know specific
languages: the small square
represents English speakers,
the triangle represents Marathi
speakers, the big square
represents Telugu speakers,
and the circle represents Hindi
speakers.
The diagram divides into 12
distinct regions, each
representing different
combinations of language
knowledge. For instance, region
5 represents people who speak
only English and Hindi.
Sample Questions
People who speak English
and Hindi only: 5
People who speak Marathi
and Telugu: 13 (regions 6 +
7)
People who speak only
English: 12
People who speak English,
Hindi and Telugu: 2
People who speak all
languages: None
