The Southern Plateau
Plateaus
What is a Plateau?
A plateau is an elevated
landform with a flat top that
rises above surrounding
plains but is lower than
mountains4essentially a
raised, flat platform of land.
Unique Features
Plateaus have rough,
uneven slopes with flat
tops, earning them the
nickname "Table Lands" as
they resemble massive
tables rising from the
landscape.
Geographical Significance
Plateaus create distinct ecosystems between mountains and
plains, providing diverse habitats and valuable resources for
human settlements.

What are the Southern Plateaus?
The Southern Plateaus are elevated lands
south of India's northern plains, flanked by
the Ghats hills. The Aravalli Ranges form the
northwest boundary and the Rajmahal Hills
the northeast.
Triangular in shape with Kanyakumari at its
southernmost tip, this region covers most of
India. The Narmada River divides it into the
northern Central Highlands and southern
Deccan Plateau.
The plateau slopes from west to east with a
rocky, uneven surface. Its soil is typically
shallow and less fertile than other regions.
Rivers cutting through the plateau erode
rocks and create valleys with deeper, more
fertile soil. These valleys form pockets of
productive farmland throughout the otherwise
rocky terrain.

Central Highlands
Key Features
The Central Highlands
comprise the Malwa Plateau
in the northwest and
Chotanagpur Plateau in the
northeast. Bordered by
various hill ranges, these
highlands form the source of
numerous rivers.
Rivers and Waterfalls
Rivers from this region feed
into the Yamuna and Ganga.
The Chambal, Betwa, and Son
are major rivers here. Steep
elevation drops create
spectacular waterfalls like
Jog Falls in Karnataka.
Mineral Wealth
The Chota Nagpur Plateau
(spanning Jharkhand, parts of
Odisha and Chhattisgarh) is
rich in coal and minerals,
making it a crucial mining
region vital to India's
industrial development.

The Deccan Plateau
Geographical Extent
Stretching from the Narmada River
to southern India, the Deccan
Plateau is enclosed by the Western
and Eastern Ghats that meet at the
Nilgiri Hills, forming natural
boundaries for this vast tableland.
River Systems
The Godavari, Krishna, and Kaveri
rivers originate in the Western
Ghats and flow eastward across the
plateau. The Godavari, the region's
longest river, traverses the plateau
before emptying into the Bay of
Bengal.
Eastern Ghats
Rivers flowing from the Western
Ghats segment the Eastern Ghats,
creating valleys and passages
through the mountain range as they
journey eastward to discharge into
the Bay of Bengal.
