REPRODUCTION
IN ANIMALS
C l a s s - 8
Reproduction is a fundamental process for the continuation
of life on Earth. Just like in plants, animals have evolved
diverse mechanisms to reproduce and ensure the survival of
their species. Understanding how reproduction occurs in
animals is a key aspect of biology.

Reproduction
Sexual reproduction involves the fusion of specialized cells
called gametes, one from a male and one from a female, to
form a zygote.
In mammals, including humans, males produce male gametes
called sperm, while females produce female gametes known as
eggs or ova.
Fertilization, the fusion of sperm and egg, typically occurs
internally within the female's body. However, some animals, like
fish and frogs, undergo external fertilization in water.
The zygote develops into an embryo, which eventually leads to
the birth of a new individual.

Asexual reproduction involves the creation of new individuals
without the involvement of gametes. It results in offspring
that are genetically identical to the parent.
Various methods of asexual reproduction exist, including
budding, binary fission, fragmentation, and parthenogenesis.
A common example of asexual reproduction is budding in
hydra, where a new organism forms as an outgrowth from
the parent.
